Laban Underscore Jam – Inspired by Rudolf Laban

Laban Underscore Jam – Inspired by Rudolf Laban

In this jam, we invite you to engage with Laban’s core ideas. Before the dance begins, we will introduce and explore the following principles:

🎭 Effort & Dynamics – Movement is shaped by qualities of weight, space, time, and flow. How does intention transform the way we move?

🌌 Space Harmony – Explore the body's relationship to space, discovering new pathways and patterns. Laban's spatial scales guide us in navigating movement with clarity and depth.

πŸ”„ Movement as Language – Motion is meaning. Through improvisation, we find a shared physical language, where each movement is a dialogue with others and the environment.

πŸŒ€ Shifting States & Transitions – From stillness to explosion, from flow to sharp articulationβ€”how do we shift between movement states and embrace transformation?

πŸ“ Geometry of the Body – The body as an architecture in motion. Through expansion, contraction, spirals, and diagonals, we uncover the spatial poetry within us.

Throughout the jam, we will move between structured exploration and open improvisation, allowing Laban’s principles to guide our journey.

Tribute to Nancy Stark Smith

This "Underscore" jam concept was created by Nancy Stark Smith. We honor her pioneering work in Contact Improvisation, continuing to explore and expand her vision. Just as she invited us to play and discover, we engage in this ongoing conversation, exploring new ways of being in movement together.

We will begin and end together, committing to a shared experience where even stillness is an act of connection.
